Sex is something that we only talk about with close friends. There is still a taboo surrounding it, and we believe that this taboo should be broken—especially when it comes to BDSM. But what does BDSM stand for? What exactly does it involve? And is it really as exciting as many people claim?

Fifty Shades of Grey
If you’ve ever watched the famous Fifty Shades of Grey series, you probably already have a certain idea or impression of what BDSM involves. But how accurate is that impression, really?
What exactly does BDSM mean?
BDSM is a very diverse world that involves much more than just the sadomasochistic scenes and wild situations that people often think of. SM—sadomasochism—is actually only one (small) part of a much larger whole. The abbreviation BDSM stands for:
- Bondage & Discipline
- Dominance & Submission
- Sadism & Masochism
These main categories also include many different practices, such as bondage, role-playing, spanking, choking, and more. And here’s the surprise… BDSM is not always just about sex.
In fact, for most people, BDSM is not about sex at all. Rather, it gives them the opportunity to learn to trust each other, explore boundaries together, and build a deeper connection with one another.
What makes BDSM unique?
What makes BDSM beautiful and unique is that it means something different to everyone. Each person gives it their own interpretation. For some, it is about the thrill of control and surrender. Others enjoy the physical aspect, such as the feeling of a rope around their wrists or the sound of a whip.
What all forms do have in common is that they are based on consent. Open communication, clear agreements, and mutual respect are always at the center of BDSM.
What is sadomasochism?
We briefly mentioned SM at the beginning of this article. This well-known aspect of BDSM is often the first thing that comes to mind when people try to form an idea of what BDSM is.
So, if you think that BDSM mainly involves spanking, (light) choking, and similar activities, then you are actually thinking of the SM category.
This aspect of BDSM is largely about deriving pleasure from pain. This can happen in two different ways: by inflicting pain on someone else or your partner (sadism), or by taking on a submissive role and experiencing the pain yourself (masochism).
Although you might not expect it, the difference between pain and pleasure is very small. This is because the two areas in your brain that are responsible for these sensations are located very close to each other.
As a result, pain can also trigger the release of endorphins. These are the well-known hormones that create feelings of happiness and pleasure. Therefore, giving or receiving painful sensations can—when done in a safe setting and with clear agreements—lead to sexual enjoyment. Unique, isn’t it?
What is dominance and submission?
Dominance and submission, also known as power play, are aspects of BDSM that revolve around control and trust. The idea is very simple: one person takes the lead (the dom, or dominant), while the other completely surrenders (the sub, or submissive).
The role of the dom is that of the leader: he or she sets the rules, gives instructions, and guides the entire interaction. On the other hand, the sub voluntarily surrenders and lets go of control. This unique role-play is not only about power, but above all about trust!
What is bondage and discipline?
Bondage is mainly about physical acts. Think of being tied up with ropes, chains, or handcuffs. The idea is to literally restrict someone’s freedom of movement, which can create tension and excitement.
“Here too, just like with dominance, it is about obedience, rules, and sometimes even punishment… It all depends on how far you want to go!
How do you get started with BDSM?
For the newbies among us, we’d also like to share how to get started with BDSM. For many people, it can be an exciting and challenging step.
For the beginners among us, we’d also like to explain how to get started with BDSM. For many people, it can be an exciting and challenging step.
We recommend starting with a lighter form of BDSM. This way, you and your partner can try it out together and see whether it’s something that appeals to you. Of course, for this first experience—and really for all future experiences as well—it’s important that you do this with someone you completely trust.
“As is almost always the case with sex: communication is key!”
And when it comes to BDSM, communication is even more important. So, first discuss together what both of you would like to do and what you expect from the experience. Talk about what appeals to you and make it clear where your boundaries lie. We’ll discuss the golden rule separately in the next paragraph, precisely because it is so important:
The golden rule: a safe word
There are several rules that you should follow when practicing BDSM, but one of them stands above all the others: agree on a safe word before you begin! Using one is essential for ensuring a pleasant experience for both partners. You can say this special word whenever you want to stop or if your boundaries are being crossed. After all, just because you practice BDSM doesn’t mean that you can no longer set boundaries.
A safe word can really be anything. However, we recommend choosing a word that has absolutely nothing to do with sex, such as ‘car’ or ‘bicycle’. Notice how short these words are? That makes them easier to say when you’re experiencing pain. A word that is too long can become difficult to pronounce when you’re fully immersed in the moment.
Make sure that both of you clearly know the safe word beforehand and understand that saying it means you must IMMEDIATELY stop and take a break.
So, that was it! We hope that after reading this blog article, you now have a good understanding of the world of BDSM and that you feel inspired to try it yourself with someone you completely trust.
